I just got back to the office after previewing one house for a client who is out of town. I was there for under half an hour to take pictures and measurements. It is a beautiful day, so all the doors and windows were wide open and plenty of fresh air was blowing through the house. But still, as I sit down to my computer to upload the pictures I am amazed to find that my hands are shaking and I have a splitting headache. As soon as I entered the house I could smell the toxins (and the odor of dog that is so hard to cover up). I knew there were airborne toxins, but I thought I would be okay because I was only there briefly, and the windows were open. But, when I got back to my car with shortness of breath and a bad taste in my mouth, I started to wonder how people live like this every day.
Now that I sit here trying to type with my hands shaking from the effects of the neurotoxins as they enter my system, I know exactly what you are thinking… you are thinking that I am extra-sensitive. I am sensitive in that I can feel these effects at a pretty low rate of exposure. But, this is what you should feel when you are exposed to an inhaled toxin that is specifically designed to affect your nerves. The problem is that people who live with these chemicals in their homes everyday cannot feel the effects anymore. In fact, they are so addicted to these chemicals, that they actually experience withdrawal symptoms and when they are away from these air-borne alcohols, they start to feel sad. They just want to go home again where they feel a false sense of euphoria.
I know the other thing you are thinking is that this must be some obscure product, or scary poison that happened to be at this one property. Sadly, no. These toxins are found in most of the homes in America. Some of the properties I show are worse than others of course. And most homeowners would be shocked to know that I am talking about their home because they often don’t even realize that their house is affecting their health in this way.
The good news is that there are things that you can easily change and you will notice immediate affects to your health and well-being. It is so empowering to know that you have choices about the products that you bring in to your home. If you have small children you need to be especially aware, since they are so much more vulnerable to these chemicals. (You can make many of these changes whether you own your home, or are renting.) The second piece of good news is that you do not need expensive equipment to discover these toxins. I can to do a quick walk-through of your home and then sit down with you (maybe outside on the porch in the fresh air) and discuss some of the home finishes, furnishings, and everyday products that may be affecting your health. The number of conditions that have environmental factors sometimes surprise people. And there are simple, and inexpensive solutions that can start to make a difference almost immediately.
