Opportunities for Empowering Choices
- The good news is that there are things that you can easily change and you will
notice immediate affects to your health and well-being.
You can make many of these changes whether you own your home, or are renting.
- The second piece of good news is that you do not need expensive equipment
to discover these toxins. I can to do a quick walk-through of your home and
then sit down with you (maybe outside on the porch in the fresh air) and
discuss some of the home finishes, furnishings, and everyday products that
may be affecting your health.
Going Green is not just a fad…
I come across many instances of Green-Marketing, or more often misleading marketing. The use of the term Green has become a pervasive trend to the point where some people are losing interest. If everything is labeled Green regardless of whether it is environmentally-friendly, then it begins to lose its intended meaning.
And it is funny, because most people who are living a “Green” lifestyle (choosing natural products, living in harmony with their environment, making responsible choices, shopping locally) would make the choice for their own economical and health reasons, regardless of branding.
If you ask someone of my grandmother’s generation who lived through the Great Depression, they know more about how to “reduce, reuse, and recycle” than the most avid environmental science student.
I want to help you to find Sustainable Solutions that work for you and your family. Solutions that help you to create healthier homes so that you can get back to enjoying your time together instead of worrying about why your kids are sick.
I know you feel like you are so busy that you don’t even have time to think about making changes. But, wouldn’t you rather be taking your kids to soccer than to the doctor’s office?
Many times I am asked about the Costs of Going Green. If you look at only the purchase price of certain products, it can be deceptive. A natural or authentic item often requires a larger initial investment than an artificial product.
But then there are the hidden costs of ownership. Many of the more affordable options for home finishing products are imitations of a natural product. The largest danger from these products is the presence of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC’s) which off-gas once they are installed in the home and the chemicals begin to evaporate.
Breathing these indoor air toxins leads to a number of health problems including allergies and asthma, headaches, nausea, dizziness, and insomnia. But they also lead to increases in obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, birth defects and behavioral health issues.
So when you add up the true cost of ownership, you need to factor in the lost productivity at work and school and the cost of medications and medical care.
The last thing that you want is to make a large investment, and then find that it is making you and your family sick.
Since the eco-friendly lifestyle encompasses so many different ways of living it’s easy to incorporate smart lifestyle choices into our daily lives. Even little changes can go a long way towards improving our health and protecting the environment.
